In October 1968, Gene Mackey—with a passion for architecture and a will to succeed—took a risk. He opened a one-man office on the 20th floor of the Railway Exchange Building in downtown St. Louis with 800 square feet and a view of the Mississippi River. His risk paid off; more than 50 years later Mackey Mitchell has thriving offices in St. Louis; Asheville, North Carolina; Lawrence, Kansas; and Dallas, Texas. Mackey’s influence and guidance developed the firm into a group of thought leaders driven by a philosophy of life-long learning and dedication to the power of human potential. Mackey Mitchell is now a proven expert in planning, design, construction, and renovation for higher education—including residential, social, dining, and academic facilities—as well as K-12 and special needs education, workplace, and civic + cultural facilities. Having designed buildings for more than 85 higher education clients, we understand the anatomy of a successful campus and what attracts students to it. Our broad range of student life experience gives us uncommon insight into how each generation chooses to engage with their university spaces.
