Maiak (Ukrainian for "lighthouse") is an independent bilingual magazine and cultural organisation connecting Ukraine and the United Kingdom through stories, art, and shared cultural experiences.

We publish in both Ukrainian and English, telling the stories of ordinary people who do extraordinary things. Our journalism explores culture, heritage, art, music, literature, social impact, migration, disability, and community life—always through the lives of real people.

At Maiak, we believe the strongest bridges between countries are built not by politics, but by culture and human connection. Every article, interview, exhibition, and event is an invitation to better understand one another.
Our journalism follows the principles of slow journalism. Rather than chasing headlines, we create thoughtful stories that remain valuable long after the news cycle has moved on. We believe empathy, context, and careful storytelling have lasting power.

Our international team brings together journalists, editors, photographers, illustrators, and creatives from Ukraine, the United Kingdom, Brazil, Azerbaijan, and beyond. Together we share one belief: every person has a story worth telling with dignity and respect.
We welcome collaborations with museums, galleries, libraries, universities, charities, artists, businesses, and cultural organisations that share our values.

Our beliefs:
People first — every story begins with a person.
Culture builds bridges — art, heritage, and creativity connect communities across borders.
Bilingual by design — every publication is created to reach both Ukrainian- and English-speaking audiences.
Ethical storytelling — we value accuracy, empathy, and respect over sensationalism.
Stories that matter — journalism that informs, inspires, and encourages positive change.
