Making Language Visible at Westerlund Consulting helps educators uncover and teach the language of academic disciplines so all students, especially multilingual learners, can fully participate in rigorous grade level learning. Grounded in Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) and aligned with the WIDA English Language Development Standards, we support schools and districts through professional learning, coaching, and curriculum development. Our work helps teachers center language as the main tool for accessing disciplinary learning, including how to read complex reading and writing, and design high-challenge, high-support classrooms. By making the hidden language of science, mathematics, social studies, and literacy visible, we help educators expand access to disciplinary learning and empower students to communicate, think, and succeed across the curriculum.
