Mars-FEED (Mars Food Ecosystem Engineering Design ) is a multidisciplinary student-led research initiative exploring food systems for future Mars habitats and extreme environments.

Inspired by NASA’s Mars to Table Challenge, Mars-FEED brings together students, academics, mentors, and early-career researchers from different universities and disciplines to investigate food production, nutrition, processing, storage, and meal preparation for long-duration space missions.

Our work is organised across four independent research teams: Nutrition, Controlled Environment Agriculture, Food Processing & Storage, and Meal Preparation. Each team focuses on a narrower research direction within the wider food ecosystem, with the goal of developing research outputs and working towards publishable academic articles.

Beyond the technical research, Mars-FEED is also a pilot model for building student-led research communities. We aim to help students step into research, collaborate across disciplines, learn from mentors, and work on real problems connected to space, sustainability, and extreme environments.

At its core, Mars-FEED is about learning research by doing research, creating a space where students from different fields can work together, support each other, and grow into future researchers, innovators, and problem-solvers.

Mars-FEED is conducted through the Knowledge Angels network and is currently growing as a collaborative research community for students, educators, mentors, and future partners.
