Derek Drost

Derek Drost is an accomplished professional in plant genetics and breeding, currently serving as Global Director of Cocoa Genetics & Breeding at Mars since November 2022. In this role, Derek leads a team focused on developing sustainable and responsibly sourced cocoa supply chains through advanced breeding techniques. Prior to Mars, Derek was Vice President of Plant Genetics at Unfold, where efforts included launching breeding programs and innovations for vertical farming. Engagements at BASF included managing biosciences innovation initiatives and cultivating external collaborations for vegetable seeds, while earlier experience at Monsanto encompassed leadership roles in genomics and breeding strategies across vegetable and field corn crops. Derek holds a Ph.D. in Plant Molecular Biology from the University of Florida and a Bachelor's Degree in Agronomy and Crop Science from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
