Michael Freitas

Co-Founder & Chief Science Officer at MassMatrix

Michael Freitas is a Co-Founder and the Chief Science Officer at MassMatrix. Michael is also a Director Proteomics Shared Resource at the Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center-James Cancer Hospital & Solove Research Institute, and a Professor at The Ohio State University College of Medicine.

Freitas has over 17 years of experience in the field of clinical/translational proteomics, biomarker discovery/validation and bioinformatics for mass spectrometry based proteomics. Their work focuses on the determination of side chain modifications of proteins important in Chromatin Remodeling and relating these modifications to aberrant cellular function in cancer.

At The Ohio State University College of Medicine, Freitas was the Director of the Biomedical Science Graduate Program. In this role, they oversaw curriculum development, recruiting, admissions, program administration and student/faculty mentoring. Michael also founded The OSU Data Science for Scientists Club, an innovative teaching environment for students and staff to develop quantitative skills in data science.

Freitas has been with MassMatrix since its inception in 2013, first as a Board of Advisors member and then as Cofounder and Chief Science Officer. In their role as Chief Science Officer, they are responsible for the scientific direction of the company and its products. Michael has also been instrumental in developing the company’s mmCloud platform, which delivers off-the-shelf and custom biodata analysis workflows that illuminate the R&D enterprise and accelerate business.

Michael Freitas has a PhD in Chemistry from Kansas State University, and a degree in Chemistry from Oklahoma State University.
