Medthera was born during a twenty-minute walk in 2014. It was a walk that Medthera founder Alan Tholkes scheduled months in advance and drove hours to get to. A walk that involved several physical therapists, a harness, and a treadmill. A walk that lifted Alan’s spirits and inspired him to embark on a new mission.  

Alan hadn’t walked since 1976 when he was in a car accident and suffered a spinal cord injury that left him confined to a wheelchair. In the ensuing years, with his company Altimate Medical, Alan invented numerous products that could help others in similar situations, including the EasyStand product line which became a global leader in mobility equipment.  

Thirty-eight years after his accident, Alan’s 20-minute walk brought life back into his body and reminded him who he was. After that walk, he knew he wanted to walk every day, not just during an occasional physical therapy office visit.  

But Alan found there weren’t any existing products that could help him walk at home. So, he rolled up his sleeves and went to work. Alan founded Medthera and put together a team to design and build a device that would allow people with limited mobility to walk at home: a supported walking station.  

From the start, the Medthera team was laser-focused on the walking station’s key characteristics. They wanted it to be safe, easy-to-use, compact, and affordable. The team worked tirelessly with doctors, therapists, and people with all kinds of mobility challenges. With every prototype, the design was refined and ultimately became WalkPort.
