Nico Smit

Nico Smit is an accomplished electrical engineer with extensive experience in the field. Currently serving as Principal Electrical Engineer at Mercury NZ since October 2019, Nico Smit also held the position of Senior Electrical Engineer. Prior involvement includes leadership as Chair of the CIGRE International Study Committee A1, focusing on Rotating Electrical Machines, from August 2014 to September 2020. During this time, Nico Smit received several notable awards, including the 2020 Honorary Member Award and the 2021 Technical Council Award. Previous experience at Eskom from January 1999 to September 2019 included roles as Chief Engineer - Electrical and participation as a member in various CIGRE committees. Educational credentials include a Bachelor’s Degree in Heavy Current from the University of Pretoria, obtained from 1994 to 1998.
