Johan Schalkwyk currently serves as Voice Lead at the Meta Super Intelligence Lab since June 2025. Previously, Johan held the position of ML Lead at Sesame from May 2024 to July 2025. Prior to these roles, a significant tenure at Google spanned from 2005 to May 2024, culminating in the title of Google Fellow and serving as Area Tech Lead for Speech, alongside leading the Language Inclusivity Moonshot. Johan's earlier positions at Google included Engineering VP, Distinguished Software Engineer, Principal Software Engineer, Senior Staff Software Engineer, Staff Software Engineer, and Senior Software Engineer. Educationally, Johan earned a Master of Engineering in Robotics with a focus on reinforcement learning from the University of Pretoria in 1993.
