Thomas Whelan is a highly experienced research scientist specializing in computer vision, machine learning, and localization. Whelan began a career in robotics at RoboEireann, contributing to the RoboCup SPL team from 2010 to 2014. Following this, Whelan completed a project on autonomous robot localization as an intern at the Engineering Department of NUI Maynooth. A Dyson Research Fellow at Imperial College London from 2014 to 2015, Whelan developed the ElasticFusion system. Whelan has been a research scientist at Meta since 2015, focusing on advanced research at Reality Labs. Additionally, Whelan participated in the Marine Robotics Group and served as a lab demonstrator and researcher during academic tenure at NUI Maynooth. Whelan holds a BSc in Computer Science & Software Engineering, with first-class honors, and a PhD in Computer Science from the National University of Ireland, Maynooth.
