Barry O'Brien has a wide range of work experience in various roles and industries. Barry began their career as a Patent Examiner at the USPTO from 2003 to 2004. Barry then worked at the US Army Research Laboratory as a Robotics Engineer and later as a Team Leader from 2004 to 2010, where they focused on autonomous ground robotics, ISR systems, and computer vision.

In 2010, they joined Newton Research Labs and served as a Senior Software Engineer, Software Manager, and eventually as the Director of Software from 2010 to 2013. This role involved developing robotics and computer vision software and managing cross-disciplinary teams.

In 2013, Barry joined Amazon, starting as a Technical Program Manager and Systems Engineer responsible for developing the initial Visual Bin Inspection (VBI) system. Barry then moved up to become a Senior Hardware Development Engineer, Camera Systems Manager, Software Development Manager, and Manager of Avionics Hardware Development. These roles involved overseeing various aspects of hardware and software development, including camera systems, robotic imaging devices, avionics, and specialized inspection systems.

Finally, Barry is currently working at Metropolis Technologies as the Director of Hardware Engineering and was recently promoted to Senior Director of Hardware and Machine Learning in 2022.

Barry O'Brien pursued their education in the field of Computer Engineering. Barry completed their Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison between 1999 and 2003. Continuing their academic journey, they went on to achieve a Master of Science degree from The Johns Hopkins University in Computer Engineering for the period of 2004 to 2006.
