On 4 July 2016, the Midland Metro Alliance came together with the remit to extend the Midland Metro tram network by approximately 40km across the region over the next ten years. 

Nine partner companies form the alliance: the West Midlands Combined Authority who own and operate the tram; a design consortium of Egis Rail, Tony Gee and Pell Frischmann; and contractor Colas Rail with their sub-alliance partners from Colas Limited, Bouygues UK, Barhale and Auctus Management Limited.
