Michael Cox has a diverse work experience spanning over several decades. Michael started their career as an Assistant Master at Bristol Grammar School in 1960 and later became an Assistant Master at Cheltenham College. In 1963, they took up the role of Lecturer in Educational Research at Aberdeen College of Education. In 1971, they joined Poole Grammar School as a Senior Teacher and Head of Chemistry, where they stayed until 1991. From 1974 to 1994, they served as the SAC Chemistry Chairman at Associated Examining Board. Michael co-founded Subject Publications in 1991, where they worked as a Senior Partner and Joint Owner until 2006. In 1989, they became a self-employed Freelance Author. Currently, they are the President of Mimast Inc, a family publishing company based in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, specializing in music compositions.

Michael Cox's education history begins in 1952 when they studied at the University of Bristol and obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry. Michael continued their education at Utrecht University in 1955 for one year, studying Chemistry. In 1956, they returned to the University of Bristol and pursued a PhD in Physical Chemistry, which they completed in 1958. From 1958 to 1959, Michael attended the University of Southern California, focusing on Chemistry but not obtaining a specific degree. Finally, in 1959, they returned to the University of Bristol to pursue a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) with a specialization in Chemistry Teaching, which they completed in 1960.
