Kelly Backes is a lead quantum physicist with expertise in quantum sensing, microwave/RF systems, superconducting circuits, noise characterization, signal processing, and statistical inference. Currently, at MITRE, Kelly leads a superconducting sensor program and focuses on bridging laboratory research with real-world applications. Previously, Kelly served as a research assistant at institutions including Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and UC Berkeley, and has held multiple teaching roles while pursuing advanced degrees in physics at Yale University. Kelly earned a PhD from Yale in 2021 after developing and operating a detector for axion dark matter research.
