Ben Backwell

Ben Backwell serves as the CEO of the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) and Chair of the Global Renewables Alliance, where they focus on scaling up renewable energy solutions to address climate challenges. Under their leadership, GWEC's membership and revenues have significantly increased, and they have played a pivotal role in climate diplomacy and the establishment of initiatives like the Global Offshore Wind Alliance. Previously, Backwell held various positions as a journalist and analyst, including roles at FTI Consulting and Recharge AS, and authored the book "Wind Power; the Struggle for Control of a New Global Industry." They are also involved in multiple boards and committees related to renewable energy and speak fluent Spanish and Portuguese. Backwell earned an MSc in Political Science from the School of Advanced Study, University of London.
