Joan Smith has extensive work experience spanning over three decades. Joan began their career as a Controller at ENERCAP Corporation, DCR Petroleum in 1985, and held this position until 1990. Subsequently, they joined the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, where they worked in the Division of Corporation Finance for a year. Joan then joined Transocean, where they served as the VP Controller Investor Relations from 1991 to 1999. Following this, Joan joined Shell as the VP Director of Finance for a decade. In 2010, they moved to NRG Energy, where they held the position of Manager Ethics and Compliance until 2012. Joan then worked at Flotek Industries, Inc. as the SEC Manager Financial Reporting for a year. From 2013 to 2014, they served as the SEC Financial Reporting Manager at Weingarten Realty Investors. In 2014, Joan became a Consultant Financial Reporting at Sirius Solutions, LLLP. Joan continued their career at Bellicum Pharmaceuticals, Inc., where they worked as the Senior Manager Financial Reporting and Compliance from 2015 to 2017. Currently, Joan holds the position of VP/Controller at Moleculin Biotech, Inc.

Joan Smith completed their BBA ACC degree at the University of Houston, C.T. Bauer College of Business. Joan graduated with honors (cum laude) in Accounting and Business/Management. Joan later pursued a Management degree specializing in International Business at Rice University. Additionally, they completed a two-year Executive MBA program with a focus on International/Global Studies, which included travels to South China and Hong Kong, at the University of Houston, C.T. Bauer College of Business.
