James Simpson has been working in the professional field since 2007. Their first job was as a Freelance Writer for Japan Military Review in 2007. In 2008, they began working as a Full-Time English Instructor for Shane English School, where they taught English to clients of all ages. In 2010, they became an Editor & Analyst for New Pacific Institute, managing weblogs, promoting them, and maintaining the back-end. From 2013 to 2014, they worked as a Freelance Writer for War is Boring and a Freelance Contributor for IHS Jane's. In 2012, they began working for Inalab Japan as a Quality Manager and was formally recognized as such by AIHA-LAP and NVLAP in 2017. Since 2018, they have been working for Moneytree, where they have held the roles of Engineering Manager, Support Ops Engineer, Site Reliability Engineer, and Data Aggregation Engineer.

James Simpson has an educational background that spans from 2003 to 2019. James obtained a BScEcon in International Politics and Strategic Studies from Aberystwyth University between 2003 and 2006, and then went on to obtain an MScEcon in Security Studies (Research Training) from the same university between 2006 and 2007. In 2008, they obtained their CertTESOL from the Language & Learning Centre at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth. In 2013, they obtained their Developing and Maintaining a Laboratory Quality Management System certification from the American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA). In 2015, they obtained their P401 - Identification of Asbestos in Bulk Samples (PLM) certification from the British Occupational Hygiene Society (BOHS). Finally, in 2019, they obtained their Sumo Logic Level 1: Sumo Pro User and Level 2: Sumo Power User certifications from Sumo Logic.
