Keith Smith

Senior Lead Storage Engines at MongoDB

Keith Smith has a diverse work experience spanning multiple companies and roles. Keith started their career at VenturCom, Inc. in 1988 as a System Engineer, where they designed and developed features for the company's real-time UNIX operating system. Keith also provided customer support, training, and performed release engineering.

In 1993, Keith joined Harvard University as a Research Assistant, where they were part of a small team that designed and built the VINO extensible operating system. Keith was responsible for designing and implementing VINO's file system, as well as creating tools for artificially aging file systems and measuring their performance in an application-specific context.

After their time at Harvard, Keith joined Sun Microsystems in 2001 as a Staff Engineer. Keith worked in a small engineering team under Sun's Storage CTO, where they designed a data retention feature for regulatory compliance on NAS file server products. Keith also evaluated third-party SAN and NAS technology.

In 2006, Keith joined NetApp as a Principal Engineer in the Advanced Technology Group. Keith was involved in identifying and evaluating emerging technologies and technical trends that could benefit NetApp's products or enable new competitive threats. Keith'sprojects included the development of a heterogeneous metadata catalog, object-based storage systems, and new file system architectures.

Currently, Keith is working at MongoDB since 2020. Keith started as a Staff Engineer in the Storage Engines team and progressed to a Lead Engineer role, responsible for leading the development of storage engines. Keith is currently serving as the Senior Lead, overseeing the team and driving the advancement of storage engine technology.

Keith Smith completed their education at various institutions. Keith first attended Friends Seminary from 1969 to 1983. Following that, they pursued a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science from Yale University between 1983 and 1987. Lastly, they obtained a PhD in Computer Science from Harvard University, where they studied from 1993 to 2000.
