The Mount Wellington Charitable Trust (MWCT) was formed in 1964 as the charitable distribution arm of the Mount Wellington Licensing Trust (MWLT), a community-owned organisation established to control alcohol sales and direct profits back to the community.

MWCT operates in the Auckland suburbs of Mount Wellington and Panmure, with publicly elected MWLT members serving three-year terms, giving the organisation a democratic, community-owned character.

Following the sale of MWLT's hospitality business assets in 2025, MWCT transitioned to an investment-driven model. Capital is now diversified into managed portfolios, guided by Māpua Wealth, generating sustainable long-term returns to fund a consistent grant-making programme.

We run two grant rounds each year. Our approach is simple: organisations doing great work in the community know best what their needs are, so there are no prescriptive rules around what support can be applied for. Instead, we focus on how that support will create impact.

To be eligible, applications must benefit residents of the Mount Wellington Licensing Trust area and meet one or more purposes of the MWCT Trust Deed. Multi-year grants are also available for phased projects with clear milestones.
Grant administration is managed by Perpetual Guardian, New Zealand's largest manager of charitable trusts.
