The UK has much to celebrate, but we’re poorly set up to plan for our future.

We have great strengths; a culture to be proud of; incredible people.

But we face a storm of challenges: economic, demographic, security, geopolitical, technological, environmental.

Politicians are driven by election pressures and extremist voices to seek quick fixes and dodge difficult decisions.

People are left out or denied a fair opportunity.

And we struggle to find realistic answers in a media environment distorted by misinformation.

Leaving us frustrated, ignored and angry.

If we keep going like this, others will decide our fate.


We now have the tools we need to think, decide and act together for the long term.

We have a growing appetite for democratic participation, plus lots of fresh ideas, talent and imagination.

For the first time in history, technology can give millions a real say, and capture a whole country’s detailed views.

Deliberation is an approach that brings people together for informed discussions about really tough issues.

It’s proven to increase trust and help people find common ground.


We’ll ask the nation to define the future we all want, and work together to achieve it.

DIALOGUE:

We’ll provide the essential facts on the realities we face… Then host thousands of conversations to find out what people care about most.

STRATEGY:

We’ll reflect the nation’s goals and – with experts from all sectors – develop workable plans to deliver them: a shared, trusted, long-term national strategy – with the honest realism and public consent it needs to succeed.

ACTION:

We’ll set up a public delivery organisation responsible for the national strategy, that will:
• prompt government, political parties, private organisations and NGOs to act
• monitor actions taken, so voters can make informed choices and hold leaders accountable
• forge a permanent national democratic capability that we can call on again and again.

No country has ever done this before.
