Rick Cordella was named EVP and Chief Revenue Officer for Peacock, NBCUniversal’s direct-to-consumer streaming service, in March 2019. In this role, he is responsible for product, monetization strategies, editorial, channels, standards & practices, and program acquisition of topical, short-form and sports content.
Previously, Cordella served as Executive Vice President and General Manager, Digital Media, NBC Sports Group. He oversaw all aspects of NBC Sports Group Digital, consisting of Playmaker Media, a provider of end-to-end support for companies in need of live streaming solutions; direct-to-consumer services, including NBC Sports Gold; NBCSports.com; NBCOlympics,com; Rotoworld.com; the NBC Sports Talk franchises, including Mike Florio’s ProFootballTalk; and the NBC Sports, NBC Sports Talk and NBC Sports Scores apps.
Under Cordella’s leadership, NBC Sports Digital was the first company to stream an Olympic event (2006), an NFL game (2008), and a Super Bowl (2012), among many other firsts. It hosted thousands of on-demand video clips, and streamed more than 10,000 events in 2018 across NBC, NBCSN, Golf Channel, Telemundo, NBCUniverso and six NBC Sports Regional Networks. Powered by Playmaker Media, NBCOlympics.com and the NBC Sports app live streamed 4,500 total hours for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, resulting in records set with 3.3 billion total streaming minutes, 2.71 billion live streaming minutes and 100 million unique users.
Cordella has held the General Manager Role for NBC Sports Digital since 2009. He was promoted to Vice President & General Manager in April 2010, SVP and GM in May 2012, and EVP and GM in September 2016. He previously served as General Manager, Fantasy Sports, where he managed NBC Sports’ fantasy sports properties, including Rotoworld.com, SnapDraft.com, Allstarstats.com and Sandbox.com. In 2008, the Fantasy Sports Trade Association (FSTA) honored Rotoworld.com as Fantasy Content Site of the Year.
Cordella joined NBC Sports in August 2006 with NBC Universal’s acquisition of AllStar Stats, Inc., the parent company of Rotoworld.com. As Rotoworld’s general manager, Cordella handled all day-to-day duties including management, product development, computer programming, and ad sales.
Cordella graduated from Providence College with a B.S. degree in Business Management with a minor in Computer Science. He was a member of the 1997 Providence Friar men’s basketball team that went to the NCAA Elite Eight. He also holds an MBA from Boston College. A four-time Sports Emmy Award-winner, Cordella was named one of SportsBusiness Journal’s “Forty Under Forty” as one of the best and the brightest of the rising generation in sports business in 2012 and 2014.
