Netribution was set up at the end of 1999 as website to explore how the Internet could help independent filmmakers get their work made, funded & seen online. With the dotcom crash weeks later, no business plans were funded so it instead continued as a "hugely popular and influential" (Time Out) weekly magazine and newsletter, alongside new media researcher for Informa Media, book publisher for the bestselling Film Finance Handbook, documentary maker for DKTV, event organiser for London Screenings and Publicis, and initator and project manager for a series of Creative Scotland and Innovate UK funded R&D projects.

After a break of several years to focus on better understanding Open Source community building, Netribution has restarted with an international R&D project funded by Grant for the Web: Monetizing Open Video Architecture (MOVA).
