In computer science a thread represents the smallest unit of a running process. In the context of an operating system, it can be seen as the execution of a piece of code within a running process. Therefore multiple threads can be executed by a single instance of a process. Essentially speaking: A thread is the most atomic unit of code execution. In the context of central processing units, a thread represents a virtual instance of a core that executes the given instructions from a running process/or OS.
