Gary Docherty

Gary Docherty is a consultant learning disability nurse currently working at NHS Shetland, where they have dedicated 38 years to supporting individuals with learning disabilities across various settings. With 30 years as a qualified nurse and 11 years as a consultant, Gary has extensive expertise in transition services, community work, and forensic environments, including Scottish prisons. They developed the 'Blueprint' system for identifying and supporting learning-disabled individuals in prison, which is utilized in over 60 prisons globally. Gary is passionate about evidence-based research, has published numerous articles, and serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Intellectual Disabilities and Offending Behaviour. Additionally, they have played a significant role in securing over £1.1 million in funding for innovative projects and have presented extensively at conferences and governmental platforms.
