Callum Hill has extensive experience in the field of sustainable and renewable materials. Callum began their career in 1994 as a Senior Lecturer in Renewable Materials at Bangor University, where they developed a distance learning course and managed a research laboratory. In 2007, they moved to Edinburgh Napier University as a Professor of Materials Science, conducting research and teaching on sustainable and renewable materials. During their time at Edinburgh Napier University, they also focused on broader aspects of sustainable resource use, including life cycle assessment, environmental product declarations, carbon footprinting, and carbon sequestration.
In 2010, Callum founded their own consultancy, JCH Industrial Ecology Limited, where they provided advice on the sustainable use of resources, specializing in renewable resources such as wood modification, natural fiber reinforced composites, biopolymers, biorefineries, and timber technology. Callum held the role of Director at JCH Industrial Ecology Limited.
In 2013, Callum took on two additional roles. Callum became a Visiting Researcher at the NIBIO Norwegian Institute of Bioeconomy Research, conducting research on the properties of lignocellulosic materials and the interaction of water vapor with natural materials using nuclear magnetic resonance. Callum also joined Renuables as a Senior Consultant, focusing on life cycle assessment, environmental product declarations, carbon footprinting, and the development of new products based on sustainable and renewable resources. Callum also worked on industrial ecology, industrial symbiosis, and circular economies.
In 2014, Callum became a Senior Visiting Research Fellow at the University of Bath, where they continued their research and academic work. Callum held this position until 2018.
Most recently, Callum served as a Global Expert at InnoRenew CoE from 2017 to 2021. In this role, they aimed to advance the application and implementation of renewable materials and sustainable building research, promoting international research excellence, industrial outreach, and public engagement through interdisciplinary science.
