Markus currently serves as the Chief Operating Officer at NinaData, a real-time contextual data platform that uses AI and NLP for semantic analysis of web pages.
Prior to their role at NinaData, Markus was also the Chief Operating Officer at Thirdpresence, a global marketplace for programmatic online advertising, where they brought together publishers and advertisers to find the best ad inventory for campaigns.
Markus also held the position of Chief Data Officer and SVP of Video Advertising at Flowplayer, a leading online video player and publishing solution.
Before that, Markus was the Chief Product Officer and Co-founder of ThirdPresence.com, where they built and maintained the company's product roadmap for programmatic video advertising. Markus also served as the CEO and Co-founder, leading the company's transformation to video publishing and ad delivery.
Markus has also served as a Board Member at Thirdpresence and Ubipart, and as the CEO and Co-founder of Ubipart, they led the company from its inception to the launch of its mobile TV broadcast products.
Earlier in their career, Markus worked at RedLynx, where they set up and managed a new business unit for live interactive television, and at XLENT as a Senior Consultant, leading projects for telecom, media, and high-tech companies.
Markus began their career at Elisa Communications as a Business Development Manager.

Markus Bäckström began their education in 1989 at the Finnish Army Reserve Officer School, where they completed their training and earned the rank of Lieutenant in Coastal Artillery. From 1990 to 1995, Markus attended Teknillinen korkeakoulu-Tekniska högskolan and obtained their M.Sc. degree with a focus on Computer Science, Telecommunications, and Industrial Economics. Later, in 1999 and 2000, they pursued further education at Hanken School of Economics, where they completed the Elisa Communications Executive Training Programme, specializing in Marketing, Finance, and Strategy.
