John Vail has a diverse work experience in various engineering roles. John started their career in 1993 as a 4th Class Power Engineer at Pannill veneer, where they operated boilers and obtained a 3rd Class Power Engineer Certificate. From there, they worked at New Dundee Creamery as a 2nd Class Shift Engineer, operating boilers and ammonia systems, and performing maintenance on power house equipment. John then joined Gay Lea Foods as a 2nd Class Shift Engineer, where they operated high-pressure boilers, ammonia systems, and obtained a Red Seal Millwright Certification. In 1999, they moved to Maple Leaf Foods in Kitchener, Ontario, working as a 2nd Class Shift Engineer until 2012. In this role, they operated boilers and managed maintenance tasks. John then worked as a Millwright at the Region of Waterloo, repairing equipment at wells and operating water plants, and obtaining a 1st Class Water Operators Certification. Following this, they worked at Kraus Flooring as a Chief Engineer for a brief period in 2015. Currently, they are employed as a Power Engineer at the College of the North Atlantic starting from 2023.

John Vail attended Cambrian College from 1994 to 1998, where they obtained a certificate in Power Engineering. After that, they studied Millwright at Conestoga College, although the specific years are unknown. Alongside their education, John also obtained additional certifications including a 2nd Class Stationary Engineer Standardized (institution unknown) and a Class 1 Drinking Water License in Ontario. John also received a Millwright certification from the red seal institution.
