Dalbert Brandon began their career in 1978 as a Staff Scientist, Senior Scientist, and Program Manager at Mark Resources Inc., where they researched signal processing methods to apply to radar detection and identification problems, and designed and built special hardware devices to test radars. In 1992, they joined Johnson Grace as the first senior employee and a silent partner, and worked with Steve Johnson, Paul Houle, and Al Yu to invent the ART format (similar to JPEG). In 1996, Johnson Grace was acquired by AOL, and Brandon worked for AOL as a Director of Engineering and then as a V.P. Engineering. At AOL, their department developed many of AOL's features, such as AOL Radio, AOL Slideshows, and You've Got Pictures. In 2010, Brandon became a partner with Dr. Antonia Johnson to develop software to help people improve their spoken English skills at Clear Talk Mastery, Inc. From 2014 to 2015, they were a volunteer Head Coach for a high school robotics team at Valley Christian High School, competing in the FIRST Robotic Competition with over 4000 other teams located worldwide. In 2013, they worked as a volunteer with David Lippke to invent a custom data logging device that was used to map the entire Pacific Crest Trail (PCT). The device was able to continually log GPS data, once per second, with 1/2 meter accuracy, along with error information, for approximately 5 days on 2 AA batteries.
Dalbert Brandon attended UC Santa Barbara from 1974 to 1978, where they earned a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (BSEE).
