Russell Smith has extensive experience in robotics and machine intelligence, currently holding a position in Hardware Research at Nuro, Inc. since August 2016, focusing on self-driving vehicle technology for local goods transportation. Prior to this role, Russell was a Principal Engineer at Google from June 2006 to August 2016, where Russell played a key role in founding the self-driving car project and led a team in developing advanced automotive radars. Earlier career experience includes serving as Principal Software Engineer at Ubicom, contributing to 802.11 wireless technology, and as a Senior Software Engineer at MathEngine, where Russell developed core technology for real-time physics simulation. Russell holds a Ph.D. in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from The University of Auckland.
