Joan Balkcom

Joan Balkcom is currently serving as an Assistant Principal at the New York City Department of Education, a role they have held since 1979. Previously, Joan worked as a Teacher/Director and later as an Assistant Principal/Director, where they successfully recruited and supervised numerous staff members and managed instructional budgets. Their earlier experience includes serving as a Staff Developer at Communication Arts, where they initiated grant proposals that led to the restructuring of the school into an arts middle school. Joan earned a Master’s degree in Reading from Teachers College, Columbia University, and holds a BS in Elementary Education from Boston University, along with an MS in Supervision and Administration from Pace University.
