Offbeat is a professional audio production company based on Edinburgh’s Royal Mile, specialising in high end audiobook production, voice over and ADR recording.
We are an official studio provider and official programme provider for BBC Radio, and our studio is BBC approved for broadcast production. We work with major publishers, broadcasters and production companies, delivering performance led, broadcast quality spoken word audio.
Offbeat has produced audiobooks, voice work and recorded programmes for leading organisations including Penguin Random House, as well as other major UK publishers and independent production companies. Our studio has worked with internationally recognised figures including Tilda Swinton, Nicola Sturgeon and Brian Cox.
We are particularly known for our directing led approach to audiobook recording. Sessions are performance focused, script accurate and paced with care, with close attention paid to language, character consistency and narrative flow. This makes Offbeat a trusted studio for author narrated audiobooks as well as actor led productions.
Alongside audiobooks, Offbeat records voice over and ADR for radio, film, television, podcasts and audio guides. Clients value our calm studio environment, linguistic precision and ability to work efficiently without compromising quality.
The studio is run by Iain McKinna, an audio producer and director with nearly fifty years experience in recording studios, music production and broadcast audio, alongside studio manager Kirsty McKinna, who oversees day to day studio operations and client care. Together they ensure a calm, professional and well run environment for long form spoken word production.
Offbeat works primarily in person from its Royal Mile studio, supporting projects from single day recordings through to full scale audiobook productions.
