OSS offers an entry point into the field of offensive cybersecurity, a proactive and adversarial approach to protecting computer systems, networks, and individuals from attacks. At OSS, you will learn real-world skills needed to succeed as an ethical hacker, with exposure to both red team and blue team security.

Some topics we cover throughout the school year in our weekly workshop meetings include web injection, cross-site scripting, brute forcing, privilege escalation, and more, including lockpicking. OSS focuses on real technical work rather than passive cybersecurity presentations, giving members hands-on experience building, breaking, and defending systems.

We regularly compete in regional and international cybersecurity competitions that place members in realistic red versus blue scenarios. These competitions expose us to live environments, operational pressure, and adversarial thinking while providing a direct stepping stone into cybersecurity careers.

OSS also maintains an infrastructure team responsible for building and operating internal labs, networks, and services used for training, competitions, and events. Members gain experience designing enterprise-style environments, deploying services, and maintaining secure systems in practice.

Beyond competitions, OSS participates in vulnerability research, defensive security training, as well as offensive. As part of our team, you will be hands-on and encouraged hack blue team or actively defend against red teamers. We organize guest speakers from industry and academia and host OSS-CON, a student-run cybersecurity conference featuring hands-on villages, workshops, and competitions.

OSS is deeply connected to the broader cybersecurity community and is officially recognized as the home of cybersecurity at CSUF. Our alumni have a strong record of employment across the cybersecurity field, reflecting the practical, experience-driven focus of the organization.
