James Peters

Deputy Legal Director at Ofgem

James Peters has a diverse work experience in the legal field. James began their career as an Intern at the Council of Europe in 2008, followed by an internship at the Court of Justice of the European Union.

In 2009, James worked as a Lawyer at Clifford Chance LLP for a year before transitioning into a Trainee Solicitor role at the same company from 2012 to 2014.

In 2014, James joined Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP & Affiliates as a Lawyer for six months, after which they moved to Ofgem. At Ofgem, they worked in various legal roles, starting as a Legal Adviser from 2014 to 2018, then as a Senior Legal Adviser from 2018 to 2019, and later as a Principal Legal Adviser from 2019 to 2022. Currently, they hold the position of Deputy Legal Director at Ofgem.

Additionally, James had a brief stint at the Competition and Markets Authority in 2016 as a Secondee.

James Peters completed their Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) in English Law at the University of Leicester from 2004 to 2008. James then pursued a Master of Laws (LL.M) in European Union Law at the College of Europe from 2008 to 2009. In 2010, they attended the University of Oxford where they obtained a Bachelor of Civil Law (BCL) with distinction, specializing in Law (Public Law, EU Law, Criminology), completing the degree in 2011. Additionally, from 2006 to 2008, James Peters studied at Université Robert Schuman (Strasbourg III) in France, where they received a Maitrise in French Law & European Law.
