John Hay has a diverse work experience spanning over several years. John began their career at BT as a Sales Advisor from 1994 to 1997. John then joined Eaton Ltd as an Analyst Programmer from 1998 to 2006. At Eaton Corporation, they worked as an Application Developer from 1998 to 2006, and later as a Team Leader & Project Manager. After that, they served as a Team Leader at Eaton Ltd from 2006 to 2009, also taking on the role of Project Manager. In 2012, John briefly worked as a Secretary at Scottish Orchards. Currently, they hold the position of Engagement Manager at Ofgem, starting in September 2019.

John Hay began their education at Rosebank Primary in Nairn, although the specific years are not provided. John then attended Golspie High School from 1985 to 1989.
