Muhammad Irfan has a diverse work experience spanning over several years. Muhammad currently holds the position of Senior Analyst Net Zero Strategy at Ofgem since July 2023. Prior to this, they worked as a Research Fellow at Y Lab Wales from April 2021 to July 2023.
Muhammad also served as a Research Associate at Cardiff University from February 2014 to March 2021. In this role, they led the "Geoinformatics & Environmental Monitoring" work package of the FLEXIS project, which is a flagship energy research project.
Before their time at Cardiff University, Muhammad worked as a Lecturer at the National University of Sciences & Technology (NUST) from 2008 to 2011. Muhammad taught courses on Spatial Decision Support Systems and GIS application development, and also coordinated Master's thesis research.
Muhammad began their professional career as a GIS Application Developer at WWF - Pakistan from September 2003 to January 2005. In this role, they developed a GIS-based fauna information/decision support system of Pakistan (FISP) to support the conservation efforts of WWF.

Muhammad Irfan completed their Bachelor of Science (BS) in Computer Science at the National University of Computer and Emerging Sciences from 1999 to 2003. Muhammad then pursued a Master of Science (MS) in Geoinformatics at Linköping University and graduated in 2006. Following their master's degree, they went on to obtain their Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Geoinformatics Engineering from Cardiff University / Prifysgol Caerdydd, where they studied from 2011 to 2014.
