Jonathan Schaeffer has held several roles throughout their career. Jonathan began working at the University of Alberta in 1985 as a Professor and is still in this position. From 2008 to 2012, they served as the Vice Provost and Associate Vice President (Information Technology) at the university. In 2012, they became the Dean of the Faculty of Science, a position they held until 2018.
In 2014, Schaeffer co-founded Onlea, a not-for-profit spin-off from the University of Alberta that produces interactive learning courses and educational experiences for various online learning platforms.
In 2017, they became the Principal at IllumiLeap, Inc., a company focused on digital strategy and artificial intelligence for business, government, and academic transformation.
Additionally, Schaeffer is a co-founder of the Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute (Amii), established in 2002.
Jonathan Schaeffer completed their Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science from the University of Toronto from 1975 to 1978. Jonathan then pursued further education and received their Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Waterloo from 1979 to 1986.
