Chao Yu is a member of the technical staff at OpenAI, having joined in March 2025. Previously, Chao worked as a software engineer at Google from May 2019 to March 2025, focusing on short video search and ranking. Prior to Google, Chao was a software engineer in computer vision at Apple from August 2013 to May 2019. Early professional experience includes an imaging software engineer internship at HCLTech in 2013 and image processing internships at Xerox in 2006 and 2007. Chao holds a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Rochester and a B.Sc. in Electronic Engineering from Tsinghua University.
