Joe Palermo is a Member of Technical Staff at OpenAI since November 2022, focusing on applied research. Previously, Joe worked as a Deep Learning Engineer at Block (formerly Square) from February 2020 to October 2022, where the primary responsibility involved applications of deep learning. Prior to Block, Joe was a Machine Learning Engineer at Dessa from February 2018 until its acquisition by Square, co-creating the deep learning-based speech synthesis system known as "RealTalk," which garnered significant media attention. Joe also participated in the Recurse Center, a retreat for programmers, in mid-2017 and served as a Software Engineer at IBM from January 2016 to June 2017, contributing to an ecommerce platform called IBM Watson Customer Engagement. Joe holds a Bachelor of Computing degree with a minor in mathematics from Queen's University.
