Director of AI at OpenSpace

Gabriel Hein has a diverse work experience in the field of robotics and engineering. Gabriel is currently working at OpenSpace as a Director of AI, responsible for leading AI initiatives. Prior to that, they held various roles at OpenSpace, including Senior Engineering Manager & Head of R&D and R&D Manager.

Before joining OpenSpace, Gabriel co-founded Canvas Construction, Inc, where they served as the VP of Automation. Gabriel'srole involved developing new tools for the construction industry, with a focus on robotic manipulation, 3D perception, mapping, planning, and autonomous behaviors.

Gabriel also worked at Pneubotics as a Senior Robotics Engineer, where they played a key role in designing and implementing high compliance, high strength pneumatically actuated robots. Gabriel developed real-time control software, firmware for sensor interfacing, and implemented various control loops and algorithms. Additionally, they performed extensive experimentation, data collection, and analysis for developing model-based control algorithms.

Earlier in their career, Gabriel worked at companies like Hadal, Inc as an Autonomous Systems Firmware/Software/Controls Engineer, Ekso Bionics as a Controls Engineer, and Pacific Biosciences as a Systems Integration and Verification Engineer.

Gabriel's educational background includes a role as a Graduate Student Researcher at the University of California, Berkeley, where they worked on research projects, and a role as a Graduate Student Researcher at Auburn University, where they contributed to the development of autonomous vehicles for competitions.

Gabriel Hein obtained their Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from Auburn University between 2003 and 2007. Gabriel then pursued a Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley, which they completed between 2008 and 2010.
