Mike Gibb is the founder and director of Operabase, a website that provides information about opera performances around the world. Mike has been involved in the opera industry for over 26 years and has been a driving force in making opera more accessible to people outside of the traditional opera world.
Gibb was born in Scotland and raised in a musical family. Mike's father was a professional musician and their mother was an amateur singer. Mike started playing piano at a young age and went on to study music at the University of Edinburgh. After graduation, they worked as a music journalist and then as an editor for an opera magazine. In 1993, they founded Operabase with the goal of providing accurate and up-to-date information about opera performances worldwide.
Operabase has grown significantly under Gibb's leadership, and it is now one of the most popular websites for opera fans. Gibb has won numerous awards for their work in promoting opera, and they were named a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 2017.
