Matt Sutherland

Matt Sutherland has a diverse work experience in the legal field. Matt is currently serving as the Chief Legal Officer at OPOC.us. Prior to this, they worked at Sutherland Consulting for 16 years, where they assisted clients in resolving real estate, estate planning, and civil matters. Matt also provided operational, structural, and taxation advice to small businesses and helped them with financing and business plans.

Matt also served as the Legal Counsel for the Delta Chi Housing Corporation & Alumni Board of Trustees, Miami Chapter, from 2011 to 2019. During their tenure, they provided legal advice and counsel to the organization.

Matt worked as a Senior Legal Counsel at the Ohio Department of Medicaid from 2017 to 2018, where they provided legal expertise in healthcare matters.

Matt also held various roles at the Ohio Development Services Agency from 2007 to 2017. Matt served as a Senior Tax Incentive Specialist, Senior Manager of Risk Management and Verification Programs, and Senior Compliance Officer. In these positions, they designed economic development tools, implemented reimbursement procedures, established audit protocols, and conducted site visits to verify compliance.

Additionally, Matt worked as a Certified Legal Intern at The Ohio State Student Housing Legal Clinic and held summer associate positions at Schulze Howard & Cox, Scott, Scriven, & Wahoff, LLP, and the U.S. Department of Justice. These experiences allowed him to gain exposure to real estate, tax, corporate, and litigation issues.

Matt Sutherland holds a Juris Doctor degree in Law from The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law, which they obtained from 2003 to 2006. Prior to that, they earned a Masters of Accountancy (MAcc) degree in Accounting from Miami University from 2002 to 2003. Matt also holds a B.S. degree in Accounting & Finance from Miami University, which they completed from 1998 to 2002. Matt Sutherland obtained their license to practice law from The Ohio Supreme Court in 2006. Additionally, they hold a Six Sigma Green Belt certification from the State of Ohio, Department of Administrative Services, LeanOhio, obtained in 2016. Matt Sutherland has also obtained the Certified Economic Developer (CEcD) certification from The International Economic Development Council.
