Optima is a South African education trust dedicated to improving the quality of basic education and learner outcomes. We are committed to giving every schoolchild in South Africa a strong foundation, addressing the inequities still prevalent in our education system.

Established in 2006 and funded by Anglo American, Optima focuses on three strategic areas: building capabilities in early grade learning, strengthening initial teacher education, and advancing research in early grade learning.

Our goal is for Grade 4 children in South African public schools to meet the international benchmarks for literacy and numeracy in their home language. We believe that transforming education takes a collective effort. And work alongside teachers, development partners, implementing organisations, research institutions, and government to address the complexities of the education sector and generate systemic change.
