Stephen Powell has a diverse range of work experience in engineering and analysis roles. Stephen began their career as an RF Engineer at Vistar in 2000, followed by a position as a DSP Engineer at Sigem from 2002 to 2003. Powell then worked as a DSP/Embedded Software Engineer at Wi-Sys Communications from 2003 to 2005, where they designed and implemented an FSK/AFSK modem for radio systems. From 2005 to 2007, they served as a Senior Embedded Software/DSP Engineer at Transcore, where they designed and implemented a low data rate satellite modem. Powell worked as a Patent Analyst at Global Intellectual Strategies from 2007 to 2009, specializing in technical analyses and prior art searches. Stephen joined RBR Ltd. as a Firmware Engineer in 2009, where they designed and implemented an inductive underwater modem. In 2010, Powell moved to SkyWave Mobile Communications as a Senior DSP Engineer. Most recently, they have been working at ORBCOMM since 2012, starting as a Senior Market Analyst and later becoming the Director of Systems Engineering.

Stephen Powell completed their Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from Carleton University from 1996 to 2000. Stephen then pursued their Master's degree in Digital Signal Processing from Carleton University, which they completed from 2001 to 2003. Later, they attended the University of Ottawa from 2004 to 2006, where they earned their Bachelor's degree in Honour's Physics-Math.
