The Panglong Initiative was formally established on 29 February 2024, inspired by the spirit of the historic Panglong Agreement, which sought to unite Myanmar’s diverse ethnic communities. Today, we carry forward this legacy by creating spaces for meaningful dialogue, collaboration, and collective action.

Panglong, a township in Shan State, is known for hosting the Panglong Conference in February 1947—an event of great historical significance that laid the foundation for uniting various ethnic groups into one nation, forming the Union of Burma. The Panglong Agreement remains one of the most defining and hopeful moments in Myanmar’s history, continuing to influence the country’s pursuit of development, democratization, and federalism.

Our journey began with a simple belief that knowledge, trust, and cooperation can overcome division, and we strive to keep the Panglong spirit alive through knowledge, trust, and unity in diversity, serving as a hub for policy learning and dialogue at the nexus of federalism, democracy, and development.
