Alexander Heffner

Host, The Open Mind

Alexander Heffner is a prominent host and creator known for his work in public affairs and civic engagement. Since May 1956, Heffner has hosted "The Open Mind," the longest-running public broadcast in the United States, focusing on a wide array of topics including politics, media, science, and the arts. In April 2014, Heffner expanded this role through the Open Mind Legacy Project, an educational media nonprofit that produces the PBS series and podcast. Additionally, since March 2022, Heffner has served as the creator of "Breaking Bread with Alexander," a documentary series on Bloomberg that explores diverse political and policy issues. Heffner is also a coauthor of "A Documentary History of the United States," a bestselling anthology published by Penguin Random House that includes significant historical documents and essays. Heffner holds an AB in History from Harvard University and is an Oscar Tang Scholar from Phillips Academy.
