John Beale

Associate Teaching Professor Emeritus

John Beale is an accomplished photography educator and professional, with a distinguished career spanning over four decades. From 2006 until retirement in July 2022, Beale served as an Associate Teaching Professor Emeritus at Penn State University, where contributions included teaching journalism, advertising, digital multimedia design, and strategic communications. Beale played a key role in establishing a photojournalism major at Penn State after initially serving as a Professional in Residence in 2001. Prior to this academic tenure, Beale dedicated 22 years to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, rising from Staff Photographer to Chief Photographer, where responsibilities included managing a team of photographers, developing coverage ideas, and overseeing equipment logistics. Additionally, Beale held adjunct professor positions at various universities and began a photography career at the Indiana Evening Gazette. Beale earned a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism from Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 1979.
