Reg Hankey started their work experience in 1972 as a Management Trainee at The Liverpool Tanning Company Ltd. Reg held various roles within the company, including Assistant Works Manager, Works Manager, Production Director, and Main Board Director. In 1989, they became a Director at Whittle Brothers (Curriers) Ltd until 1990. From 1990 to 2007, Hankey worked at Pittards plc, where they served as Technical Director, Managing Director : Divisional, Director, Main Board Director, and eventually became the CEO. Additionally, they were a Non Executive Director at UK Leather Federation from 1997. Hankey also held positions at Bellarina Ltd as Director: Fashion Retail and at Pittards Group Ltd as Director. In 2008, they became a Director at Daines and Hathaway Ltd.

Reg Hankey has a diverse education history, with a focus on leather science and industrial management. In 1974, they obtained an Operatives Certificate in Leather Technology from the City and Guilds of London Institute at Northampton College of Technology. The following year, they pursued a Certificate in Supervision and Quality Control from the same institution. In 1976-1977, they completed a Diploma in Leather Technology (HND) at Nene College/Northampton College of Technology. Additionally, during this time, they obtained a Certificate in Industrial Management from the Northampton College of Technology and the Institute of Works Managers. In 1978-1979, they pursued further education by earning a Diploma in Industrial Management from the Institution of Industrial Managers. In 1980-1981, they attended Wigan College of FE and ACCA where they obtained a Certificate in Financial Studies and a Certified Diploma in Accounting and Finance CDipAF, respectively. Finally, they completed their education journey in 2014 with a Bachelor's degree in Leather Science, Honorary APL, from The University of Northampton, Nene College.
