Blockchains secure small investment or payment exactly the same way as they secure $ billions. However, the same doesn't go for the interaction layer of blockchains. Institutions enjoy tools that are not available to everyday users including multi-sig, TSS and insured custody. 

But even these wallets are not warning about phishing attempts, presenting risks of signing a transaction or providing time-bound or limited permissions. That's why we need the 'smarter' smart wallets. It's only then the average user will have a reasonable choice to the custody of their digital assets.

Short, rough roadmap:

1. Bring threshold signature functionality to average consumers, which is currently available only to institutions and HNWI. This will allow 'multi-sig' without the expensive smart contract wallet. One can also hold assets across multiple blockchains in a single wallet.

2. Bring the cefi experience to self-custody such as whitelisting, time locks, etc.

3. Pre-emptively share risks with the user for any transaction, and stop phishing attempts and mistakes at the interaction layer before the signed message is sent to be included in the block.
