Derek Lomas

CEO and Chief Learning Scientist at Playpower Labs

Derek Lomas has worked in a variety of roles in the tech industry since 2003. Derek began their career at Universal Music Group as an Assistant to the Senior Vice President. In 2003, they founded Scape Networks, a media-driven social network for college students. Derek then joined Findaway World, LLC as a Product Development Specialist, followed by Qualcomm as an Engineering Design Research, where they conducted design research in India. In 2009, they received their PhD from the Human Computer Interaction Institute at Carnegie Mellon University. In 2015, they were a Design Fellow at The Design Lab, UC San Diego, where they were mentored by Don Norman. In 2017, they became the CEO of NeuroUX and an Asst. Professor of Human Centered Design at Delft University of Technology, where they focus on the design of AI for Wellbeing.

Derek Lomas attended Yale University from 1999 to 2003, where they obtained a BA in Cognitive Science. Derek then attended UC San Diego from 2005 to 2007, where they obtained an MFA in Social Design. Following this, they attended Carnegie Mellon University from 2009 to 2014, where they obtained a PhD in Human Computer Interaction. Derek then completed a post doc at UCSD Design Lab from 2015 to 2017, in Cognitive Science and Design. Derek also obtained a certification in Human Subjects Research from CITI.
