Mary LaMacchia

Director of Packaging Engineering & Design at PopSockets

Mary LaMacchia has a diverse work experience in packaging engineering and design. Mary is currently working at PopSockets as the Director of Packaging Engineering & Design since January 2021. Prior to this role, they held the position of Packaging Design Engineering Manager at PopSockets from March 2019 to January 2021. Before joining PopSockets, Mary worked at Sphero as a Packaging Engineer from October 2017 to February 2018. At Sphero, they collaborated with product and creative teams to develop packaging concepts and supported overall brand development. Mary also sourced components from vendors in South China and reviewed transit testing results.

Mary also gained experience at Hasbro as a Contract Packaging Engineer from March 2016 to March 2017. During their time at Hasbro, they collaborated with cross-functional teams to support structural packaging development for brands such as PlayDoh, Doh-Vinci, FurReal Friends, Baby Alive, and My Little Pony: Equestria Girls. Mary created dielines, 3D renderings, and prototypes using ArtiosCAD and managed packaging changes throughout the development process.

Additionally, Mary worked as an RIT Packaging Dynamics Lab Technician at Rochester Institute of Technology from June 2013 to May 2015. In this role, they conducted distribution testing on shipping containers and unit loads using ASTM and ISTA standards.

Mary also held an internship position as a Packaging Engineering Intern at Space Exploration Technologies from August 2014 to December 2014. Here, they developed in-process packaging and reviewed packaging instructions for propulsion components.

Mary started their career as a Packaging Engineering Intern at Burt's Bees from December 2012 to June 2013. Mary created specifications and assembly diagrams for packaging components and conducted compatibility testing for products and packaging.

In addition, they gained experience as an RIT Packaging Materials Lab Assistant at Rochester Institute of Technology from August 2012 to December 2012. In this role, they conducted materials testing, assisted students with material testing and package design, and utilized the Kongsberg cutting table to create student samples.

Mary LaMacchia has a Bachelor of Science degree in Packaging Science from the Rochester Institute of Technology, which they obtained from 2010 to 2015. Prior to that, they attended Orchard Park High School from 2006 to 2010. In addition to their degree, Mary also holds a certification as a Certified Packaging Laboratory Professional, which they obtained from ISTA (International Safe Transit Association) in June 2014.
